WHAT'S HOT - September 9th, 2005 By Valerie Ridenour Irish Kevin's has been sold. The new owners have big plans for their music schedule. They will keep favorites like Taz and introduce some new blood. One new act is John Solinski, who is sponsored by Jaeger. The reason for such prestigious sponsorship becomes apparent as soon as John picks up his guitar. John Solinski uses a looper, a great piece of equipment that enables one to play a guitar track, then play it back and play lead over it. It gives you the sound of two guitars, played by one person right before your eyes. If the guitarist is as good as John, you're in for a treat. This is very different from using tracks made at home or in the studio. You are actually seeing and hearing it go down. John begins with the Eagles' "Take It Easy". He changes a line to say "I'm looking for a lover who won't blow my brother". We all laugh. That's as close to smutty as John gets. You can take the kids. His voice soars on Tom Petty's "Free Falling". His range is excellent. More Eagles follows with "Hotel California". John's great sounding voice rolls on with "Move It On Over" followed by Z.Z. Topps' "Tush", and on into the Doobie Brothers' "Long Train Running". Someone asked for Creedence. We heard "Down On the Corner". You'll love it. Next we get into more modern John Fogarty with "Centerfield". John Solinski has excellent rapport with his audience. It's easy to become a fan! "Brown Eyed Girl"? In Key West it's expected, even demanded. John leads his audience into singing the "La, La, La, La Te Da's". They love it. My favorites from his song list include Greg Kihn's "Break Up Song", Dave Matthews' "Crash", the Georgia Sattelites' "Keep Your Hands To Yourself", REM's "Losing My Religion", Tom Petty's "Last Dance With Mary Jane", Journey's "Faithfully" and Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion". Do your music loving self a favor and go hear John Solinski at Irish Kevin's. He will definitely entertain you! |
